Frequently asked questions

How do I find out if a tree has a TPO?

Enter the postcode above, then ask the council: only the council can confirm an order.

What if my council is not in the data?

A zero then proves nothing. The checker tells you when your council does not publish its orders.

What happens if I cut a protected tree?

It is a criminal offence: an unlimited fine in the magistrates' court for destroying a tree, and a duty to replant (Town and Country Planning Act 1990, ss. 206 and 210).

Are trees in a conservation area protected?

Yes: give the council six weeks' notice before most work (s. 211).

Does it cover Scotland and Wales?

No: England only.
